The VAR Minerals division processes mineral waste. Four activities are undertaken: rubble recycling, soil remediation, soil cleansing and dumping.
Rubble recycling
Rubble from demolition projects is processed into granulates of varying granule sizes. These are used as foundation material in road building and as gravel replacements in the concrete mortar and concrete products industry.
Soil remediation
Many sites, such as former waste dumps, contain minerals that can be reused. Through remediation and sorting, we can reduce the soil volume considerably. The resultant waste, including paper, sand, gravel, timber, scrap and domestic waste) is largely reused.
Soil cleansing
Contaminated soil is processed into clean sand. The finished product is used as backfill for example for paving or as a raw material for the concrete industry.
Dumping
Material not suitable for recycling and residues from recycling processes are dumped in one of the VAR dumpsites. The content of these dumpsites is accurately registered so that if new recycling technologies are developed in the future, the residual waste can then be reused. The gases generated in the dumpsite, including methane (CH4) are captured and converted into green power.
